Fatal collision bus driver changes plea to guilty

A BUS Eireann driver involved in a fatal road crash dramatically changed his plea to guilty on the fourth day of the trial, writes Richard McCullen.

Sorin Dinu (44), of Castlecurragh Heath, Mulhuddart, Dublin, had originally denied a charge of dangerous driving causing the death of Cathal O'Leary.

Mr O'Leary was driving to work in Dublin when his jeep and a Bus Eireann Expressway bus driven by the defendant were in a collision. It happened at the Dublin roundabout near Enfield on the old Dublin-Galway road, on February 23, 2009.

Dinu was on his way to begin his 6.30am run to the capital at the time.

Yesterday at Trim Circuit Court, defence counsel Barry Hickson said his client was now changing his plea.

Judge Michael O'Shea remanded the defendant on bail to May 8 when a date for sentencing will be set.
