Farmers get €0.5bn early EU payments
FARMERS are to get advance payments of half a billion euro worth of European subsidies starting next Tuesday.
Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney said early EU payments to 105,000 farmers will help offset the costs caused by this summer's bad weather.
The payments are being made six weeks earlier than usual after Ireland applied to the EU to allow early payment of 50pc of the total.
They are part of the total single farm payments of more than €1.1bn due to Irish farmers this year under the Common Agricultural Policy.
The single farm payment is the main CAP subsidy to support farm incomes, paying out an average of €10,000 to 120,000 Irish farmers.
