Farmers' cheques phased out

THE cheque is no longer in the post but payments worth over €0.5bn to farmers should be landing in farmers' bank accounts this week.

Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney said that €538m in advance payments of the EU's Single Farm Payment have now been issued.

But the days of issuing these payments by cheque are over as the payments are now paid exclusively by electronics fund transfer.

And in another sign of changing times 65,000 farmers will be notified by text this week when their payment has been made.

Mr Coveney said this was the first time texts were being used to notify farmers of payments, and he urged all remaining farmers to sign up for this service.

More than 107,000 farmers are set to receive early payment to help offset the costs caused by this summer's bad weather.

MR Coveney said that payments were being made to 88pc of applicants.
