Family's last farewell to officer (48) who died suddenly on cycling trip

A garda who died suddenly over the weekend while cycling will be laid to rest tomorrow.

Gda John McCallion (48), whose brother Robert was killed by a speeding vehicle in 2009, died on Friday.

He was found collapsed on the road between Kiltimagh and Swinford.

Medical staff at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar were unable to save the father of three.

The tragedy is being treated as a sudden death.

Gda McCallion will be laid to rest following a funeral service at the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians Swinford.

He is survived by his wife Colette, his daughters and son, parents and sisters.

Gda McCallion's brother Robert, who was also an officer with An Garda Síochána, died when he was hit by a vehicle while dealing with an incident in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, on March 26, 2009.
