Family vigil for teenager critically injured in attack
A teenager remains in a critical but stable condition in hospital after an assault outside a Cork pub.
Mayfield gardaí have appealed for information on the incident at 10pm last Saturday off the Old Youghal Road which left a 19-year-old male with critical injuries.
The teen, who is from Cork's northside, was apparently struck a single blow when he went to the aid of a friend who was involved in a dispute.
It is believed he then struck his head on the pavement as he fell.
The young man was initially conscious and responsive at the scene.
However, his condition soon began to deteriorate.
He underwent emergency surgery at CUH in the early hours of last Sunday.
His condition is now understood to be critical but stable.
The next 48 hours are said to be vital for the young man's recovery.
His family are maintaining a vigil by his CUH hospital bedside.
Gardaí have already spoken to a number of people who were in the area around 10pm last Saturday.
However they believe some people may have witnessed the precise circumstances in which the young man suffered his injuries.
"We would appeal to anyone who may have information about what took place off the Old Youghal Road to contact us and help our inquiries," a Garda source said.
It is understood the young man was socialising in the area with friends when the incident occurred.
Gardaí want to talk to any person who was in the Old Youghal Road area between 9.30pm and 10.30pm on Saturday.
They have appealed to anyone who may have information about what happened to contact them at Mayfield garda station on (021) 4558510 or on the Garda Confidential Line (1800) 666111.
As the Old Youghal Road is a busy route, gardaí have appealed to any motorists who may have witnessed unusual activity last Saturday.
CCTV security footage is also being checked.
