A massive search launched for two adults and three young children who were lost in a woods in Co Clare ended successfully late this evening.

The coastguard at Valentia Island received a distress call around 9.30pm after the children’s father called to say the family had become disorientated and couldn’t find their way out of the Cratloe Woods – a popular area for tourists and walkers.

Coastguards units from Killable, Kilkee and Doolin were dispatched to the woods.

The family were located safe and well just before midnight.

The coastguard helicopter was also being used in the search after the family’s exact location was traced through the mobile phone used to make the distress call.

The children involved are aged four, seven and 10, according to a coastguard spokesperson.
