The grave of a father of four has been desecrated by a gang of three men.

Michael Maughan's grave was dug up on Wednesday night in the Bohernabreena Cemetery in Tallaght, Dublin.

Mr Maughan (30) passed away from meningitis in April 2008. It is understand three men entered the Dublin cemetery after 2am on Wednesday and started digging up his grave.

Mr Maughan's remains were not removed from the grave.

It is the latest in a string of tragedies to strike the Maughan family. Last April, Michael's elder brother 'Willie' Maughan (34) and his Latvian girlfriend Anna Varslavane (21) went missing. Gardaí suspect that they were murdered.

Michael Maughan's father Joe described the thugs as "the lowest scum" on Earth.

"What kind of people are out there? What happened here is the worst of the worst, but that won't stop me fighting for justice for my son," he said.

Michael's young children were distraught as they visited their father's graveside yesterday. His heartbroken mother Helen wept uncontrollably as she lay beside her son's open grave.

She pleaded for anybody with information to come forward.

Gardaí are carrying out tests on a number of items that were left behind at the scene.

Michael's brother William and his girlfriend Anna are believed to have been murdered because they had information about a gangland killing. Gardaí believe the man who ordered their deaths is a violent gang boss who operates in north Co Dublin, Meath and Louth.
