A family whose children were in care in the Carlow-Kilkenny region claimed they had to report alleged abuse of their son to the gardai themselves, despite informing a social worker.

The child was being looked after in a foster family but brought the issue to the attention of his parents and another foster parent who looked after him temporarily.

The social worker who was informed of the alleged abuse investigated the complaint and found there was no cause for concern.

The social worker did not inform the gardai, as is recommended practice.

The family has now brought the issue to the attention of the Ombudsman for Children Emily Logan.

In a separate incident, another of their children was sent an abusive text message from the phone of a social worker at 1.30am. The HSE later told the family the social worker was socialising that night and the text message was sent by somebody else without their knowledge.
