Families flee as Sandy sweeps in

IN scenes resembling a disaster movie, huge numbers off people raced from their homes and towns as Hurricane Sandy swept the eastern US seaboard.

Forecasters are renewing warnings of potentially fatal conditions as the hurricane threatens to blow life off-course for as many as 60 million people.

Officials ordered the evacuation of 375,000 people in New York City, 50,000 in Delaware and 30,000 in Atlantic City. Nearly 9,000 flights are cancelled and increasing numbers of power cuts are reported.
