Expulsion of Israeli diplomat is completed
AN official from the Israeli embassy has been expelled from the country over the forgery of eight Irish passports involved in the assassination of a Hamas leader, writes Shane Hickey.
The Department of Foreign Affairs last night confirmed that the embassy had completed the expulsion of a staff member.
The action comes after agreement was reached at a cabinet meeting and the demand was put to the ambassador, Dr Zion Evrony. Last night, the department spokesman declined to comment any further on the matter other than to say the person had been expelled.
The Israeli embassy reiterated an earlier statement that the decision was regretted.
Foreign Affairs Minister Micheal Martin yesterday met a number of Irish activists who were aboard aid ships and were deported during the recent raid by Israeli commandos just off the coast of Gaza.
Mr Evrony is due to appear before the Oireachtas European affairs committee next week.
