Ex-garda in epic journey from dawn to dusk for hospital that saved his life
ONE man and his motorbike undertook an epic journey yesterday by visiting every county in Ireland.
Retired garda Gerard McCarthy (52) and his Honda Pan European ST1300 completed the Dawn to Dusk 32 County Motorcycle Challenge in aid of the cancer unit at Mercy University Hospital in Cork -- a payback to the hospital he said saved his life.
The father-of-three, who now works as a motorbike instructor, managed to beat oesophageal cancer in 2008.
Mr McCarthy's journey began in his native Lisselton in Co Kerry at 3.45am.
He arrived at his final destination in Cork last night, having covered over 700 miles in under 24 hours.
"If my contribution could ease the journey of anyone else on the recovery road, I was willing to give it a lash," he said. Anyone wishing to support the fundraiser can do so at mycharity.ie or by contacting the Mercy University Hospital Foundation.
