A murder investigation was launched last night after a man was stabbed to death with a samurai sword in Dublin.

The victim, named locally as Karl Holmes, was beaten up by a group of people before the sword attack.

The incident happened at about 5.30pm when a row broke out outside houses at Avonbeg Gardens in Tallaght, Dublin.

The 45-year-old former boxer, from Homelawn Drive in Tallaght, was rushed to Tallaght Hospital, where he died about an hour later.

Meanwhile, gardaí have issued a fresh appeal for information on the brutal murder of teenager Raonaid Murray on the 16th anniversary of her death.

Gardaí said the two critical aspects of the case remain - why was she killed and who killed her?

"Someone has the answers to these questions," gardaí said in a statement. "Someone is protecting the killer. It is time for that person to make the call."
