FORMER Taoisigh Bertie Ahern and Brian Cowen were among more than 1,500 mourners at the funeral today of Garda David Charlton, the husband of ex-Tanaiste Mary Coughlan.

Garda Charlton, 48, died on Saturday after a short battle with cancer.

He was given a full Garda funeral with colleagues from Glenties Garda Station where he was based carrying his coffin to St Mary’s Church in Frosses, Co Donegal.

Former cabinet ministers including Dermot Ahern were joined by the North’s Deputy First Minister at the Requiem Mass in the quiet rural village.

They heard parish priest Father John McLoone say Garda Charlton, a native of Kiltimagh, Co Mayo, had been looking forward to last Sunday’s All-Ireland semi-final clash between Dublin and Mayo.

Senior members of An Garda Siochana were among the mourners including the Commissioner Martin Callinan.
