Ex-councillor on bribe charges dies

A FORMER Fianna Fail councillor who was facing charges of taking bribes to vote for land rezoning has died.

Sean Gilbride (69) had missed three scheduled appearances at Dublin District Court in recent months due to his battle with cancer.

The charges against him will be dropped after his death last Saturday. Mr Gilbride, from Skerries in north Dublin, was charged after former government press secretary Frank Dunlop said he had given £1,000 to Mr Gilbride in 1992 as a reward for voting in favour of rezoning 108 acres of land in Carrickmines in south Dublin.

He had replied "not guilty" when he was charged in October.

Mr Gilbride is survived by his wife Mary and four sons. His funeral Mass will be held in St Patrick's Church in Skerries at 12 noon tomorrow.
