RTÉ broadcaster Claire Byrne called on more families to discuss organ donation as she took on a new ambassadorial role with the Irish Kidney Association.

Presenter Byrne said it was heartening to hear that last year was a record for those signing up for organ donations and hoped this upward trend would continue.

Ms Byrne will front the 2018 Organ Donor Awareness week, which will kick off on March 31.

"All this good news greatly serves to offer hope to those 550-plus anxious people on the transplant waiting lists," she said.

"I would encourage everyone to discuss organ donation with their family members.

"It is an important and potentially life-saving conversation," she added.

The broadcaster is set to feature on a number of radio and television advertisement campaigns and on posters.
