Event a celebration of life, says athlete Sonia
SONIA Treacy was diagnosed with kidney disease when she was 21 and is currently on dialysis.
But like many of the hundreds of athletes competing at the Transplant & Dialysis Games in Dublin yesterday, she said the competition was a celebration of life.
Sonia (35) was delighted with a silver medal for the 100m. "I missed out on the last few years of the games due to illness so it's great to be back."
She received a donated kidney in 2000, which lasted until 2008, and is now waiting for another transplant.
She said the games were a great boost for all the athletes. "You form a bond with everyone else, nobody has to say anything, we're all going through the same thing."
Sonia is part of the 71-strong Irish team competing in the games which started 10 years ago.
