EU support for beef deal

Ireland has won the surprise backing of several EU countries in its bid to gain more control over a contested EU trade deal with beef-producing South American countries.

The Government was a lone voice on the issue when talks with Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay reopened last year. But at least eight countries now support Ireland, said Minister Richard Bruton.
