Emily O’Reilly attacks Dail for not 'taking itself seriously’
THE EU Ombudsman elect has launched a stinging attack on the Dail for not taking itself seriously enough.
Emily O'Reilly, the current Irish Ombudsman who takes up her new EU role in October, said the Dail spends its time "ducking and diving" and "pretending" it has no power.
Ms O'Reilly was speaking at the MacGill Summer School in Glenties, Co Donegal, and said politicians often leave the courts to "divine" their intentions when they "cobble together deliberately ambiguous laws" and sometimes "deliberately ambiguous constitutional amendments".
Ms O’Reilly was giving the John Hume lecture at the annual Summer School.
