Emergency services were put on standby in Dublin early this morning when a truck being transported on a ferry to the capital went on fire while the vessel was at sea.

The fire started in the cab of the truck on one of the decks, and is said to have filled it with smoke and set off alarms.

Gardai and the emergency services were alerted and were placed on standby but it is said the fire was extinguished before the ferry docked in Dublin Port.

There were no reports of any injuries.

The cause of the fire or the extent of the damage it caused is not known.
