Four units from the Waterford Fire Brigade are battling a fire at a derelict building in the city.

The alarm was raised at 7.40pm this evening, after a passerby noticed a plume of smoke coming from a building located in Bilberry.

The blaze is not near a residential area so emergency services say no evacuation has taken place.

It is understood the building has not been in use for a number of years.

Attempts to extinguish it were suspended for a time because of safety risks posed by burning chemicals.

There are no reports of any injuries and the fire is in a largely rural area.

An official cause for the fire has yet to be established.
