Emergency operation after massive articulated lorry carrying live cattle overturns on N11

A huge articulated lorry carrying up to 60 cattle overturned on the N11 earlier today.

The incident occurred this morning at around 6.50am just north of Arklow in Wicklow at an area known as Scratenagh Cross.

The vehicle overturned, before hitting the crash barrier and becoming perched on a barrier on the side of the road.

Several cattle were killed – with a local vet arriving on scene to euthanise some of the badly injured animals.

The driver was taken to St Colmcille’s Hospital in Loughlinstown as a precautionary measure but that no serious injuries were sustained in the single-vehicle crash.

An emergency operation earlier swung into action as the loose cattle posed a threat to passing motorists.

Nearby motorway workers, members of the fire brigade and a local farmer all worked together to construct a temporary pen to keep the animals contained.

The road has since re-opened.
