Westmeath electoral area: Latest updates

Ronan Casey

A nine-month pregnant SF candidate who did not even canvass door-to-door in Mullingar will take a Labour seat on Westmeath County Council.

Westmeath has been for years a Labour stronghold with Willie Penrose the dominant political figure. However, the party faces decimation on Westmeath County Council, with the loss of 4 seats predicted following tallies from the two Mullingar Local Electoral Areas

2 sitting Labour Councillors look set to lose seats in the Mullingar-Kilbeggan area, Deputy Willie Penrose's own in which his brother Johnnie has traditionally topped the poll and brought in 3 others with him. A further 2 will go in Mullingar-Coole.

Fianna Fail comfortably top the poll in what was, for decades, a Labour heartland. With 3 new SF Councillors on course, the Council could be under FF/SF control.

- Leading anti-windfarm campaigner Andrew Duncan will be elected.

- Longford/Westmeath By Election candidate Denis Leonard will, at least, retain his seat on Westmeath County Council.

- 4 Labour seats to go.

- 3 new seats for SF

- 1 new FF seat
