Westmeath Electoral Area: first count

Ronan Casey

Sinn Féin's first-time candidate Una D'Arcy has been elected to Westmeath County Council for the Mullingar-Coole area.

She and sitting FF Cllr Aidan Davitt were separated by just 5 votes after the first count, with both exceeding the quota.

Una said she is "Absolutely humbled by the faith people have put in me, but I do believe the support for SF is not just the dissaffected or the disillusioned but faith in our socialist message."

Davitt, who doubled his vote from 2009 said he was "delighted" to be able to serve Mullingar on the County Council again. Westmeath's 2005 Christy Ring Cup Winning Captain John Shaw FF, looks set to be elected on the next count.

Former poll topper Mick Dollard from Labour, who has been Deputy Willie Penrose's right-hand man and enforcer in Westmeath polled less than half of his 2009 voye, whilst sitting Lab councillors polled miserably. It could be double defeat for Denis Leonard, who looks set to lose his Council seat having already lost a By-Election today.

The turnout in the Mullingar-Coole Area was 51.7%
