Independent candidate Declan Bree and Sinn Fein’s Sean MacManus were elected on the first count in Sligo with 1848 votes and 1545 respectively.
It is anticipated that a second SF candidate, Collooney –based Thomas Healy who got 1131 first preferences will also be elected in the 10 –seater, as will Independent candidate Marie Casserly from north Sligo who polled 1195 fist preferences on her first electoral outing.
Another talking point was People Before Profit candidate Seamie O’Boyle ‘s strong showing . He too is likely to be in contention for one of the final seats.
Colr Bree said his success and O’Boyle’s strong showing sent a clear message to government that austerity was not acceptable. “People are feeling crucified”, he said.
