Sligo: Second recount starts in Ballymote/Tubbercurry

Another recount has been called in Sligo where the result of the Ballymote/Tubbercurry contest is on a knife edge with – for the second time – one vote separating two candidates.

After one  five hour marathon recount,  called because Fianna Fail’s Joe Queenan was one vote behind Blair Feeney of Fine Gael, the situation was dramatically reversed. At the end of  the recount Queenan was one vote in front and the Fine Gael candidate requested a second recount.

This is expected to continue for three hours. Staff , candidates, supporters and the media are praying that  once the recount is finalised, that  just one more count will  be necessary. After that count   it is expected that a  number of candidates will be eliminated while the remainder  will be deemed elected.

No matter what the result of this recount neither Queenan nor Feeney can ask for another. But another candidate could. Perish the thought.
