They say all politics is local and with one third of the boxes open in the Sligo electoral area, sitting MEP Marian Harkin is getting a big thumbs-up from voters in her home county.

Early tallies show the sitting MEP at 46 per cent in Sligo followed by Sinn Fein's Matt Carthy at 16 per cent and Deputy Luke Ming Flanagan at 15 per cent.

It's a bleak outlook for Fine Gael in Sligo with  the tally putting sitting MEPs Mairead McGuinness and Jim Higgins  at four per cent each.

Fianna Fail too are struggling with Pat the Cope Gallagher at five per cent and his party running  mate Thomas Byrne at two per cent , in the tally of mostly Sligo town boxes.
