Offaly Birr Area: First Count
INDEPENDENT councillor John Leahy has won the first seat in Offaly with a surplus of more than 1,000 votes in the Birr Electoral Area.
Leahy, a coaching co-ordinator with Offaly GAA, received 2,686
votes,23 per cent of the first preferences.
Fianna Fail's Peter Ormond, a former chair of Offaly County Council, was just 67 votes short of the quota on the first count and will be re-elected.
John Clendennen, with 1,209 votes, was the best of the Fine Gael candidates in the Birr Area and will win the seat formerly held by his father, the Kinnitty publican Percy Clendennen.
