County Roscommon update

The first count in the Athlone area has elected its first two councillors to Roscommon County Council after almost 16 hours.

Independent Tony Ward romped home on a vote of 1712, generously exceeding the quota of 1388 to hold onto his seat.

The Independent was followed close behind by Fianna Fail’s Ivan Connaughton on a vote of 1414 to take the second seat and follow in the footsteps of his father, Martin, the outgoing Mayor.

Their surplus votes will be distributed on Sunday.

First counts have yet to be declared for the Roscommon and Boyle areas. The count resumes 10am on Sunday.
