FORMER Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has backed Mary Hanafin in her decision to run in the local elections – but says he's unsure if she was right to go under the Fianna Fail banner.

On the eve of voting, the 62-year-old former FF leader was spotted enjoying a pint in Fagan's Pub in Drumcondra.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, he said he believed Fianna Fail were "doing their best", but would not be drawn on the subject further.

Asked if former Dun Laoghaire TD Mary Hanafin had his full support to run in the Blackrock ward, he said: "Yes, they all have ... everyone in the country."

However, he said he hadn't "got a clue" if the former minister had made the right decision to run for Fianna Fail.

"I'm not involved in it and don't know the ins and outs of it."

He also said he was no longer engaged in the international public speaking circuit, as he found he "misses Dublin too much".

"I did it for the first few years, but I haven't done any for the last few years.

"I like being at home, so I can follow the Dubs and Man United."
