FINE Gael grassroots in Tanaiste Mary Coughlan's constituency of Donegal South West are furious with party chiefs for running only one candidate.
Delegates chose TD Dinny McGinley (65) to run in Donegal South West over by-election candidate Barry O'Neill (37) on Sunday.
John Meehan, a former chair of Ballyshannon Town Council withdrew his nomination. He was applauded when he said: "We have the Fianna Fail Government on its knees. We should be pushing for a second seat. We're afraid to take risks."
