The General Election is called off - until tomorrow
The general election is called off - until tomorrow.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny won't be dissolving the Dail today to fire the starting gun in Election 2016.
Instead the Dail will sit this afternoon, with a debate on the inquiry into abuse in a foster home on the agenda.
Mr Kenny will also meet with Fine Gael TDs this evening.
The Dail public accounts committee will also sit this afternoon with the HSE answering questions on the abuse scandal.
This morning, Tanaiste Joan Burton said "everyone is ready for the off" as ministers expect an election to be called in the next 48 hours.
Minister Brendan Howlin said he expects Taoiseach Enda Kenny to call it today or tomorrow.
Mr Howlin was speaking this morning ahead of a Cabinet meeting and was less confident of his party's chances.
"I'm always very worried. As Mark Twain said, our demise has been written many times," Mr Howlin said.
Ms Burton was more assured.
"I'm very confident as ever of our chances. It's a good time for an election with better exchequer figures," said Ms Burton.
