Boxing clever: Hacksaw used to open ballot box in Sligo-Letrim

There's plenty of general election candidates out there on knife-edge this afternoon with the early counts expected over the coming hours.

However, this scene in the Clarion Hotel for the Sligo-Letrim count takes the proverbial biscuit.

The keys to a ballot box from Leitrim voters were misplaced this morning and there was no back-up set to be found.

Luckily, counting centre staff weren't prepared to let this slight mishap stop them and found a way to open the box.

Resourceful agents located a hacksaw and proceeded to open the box in an old fashioned way - with a hacksaw.

Traditionally bolt-cutters would be used if keys went missing but rather than delay the count, staff went at the box with the hacksaw.

The count is now well underway in the sprawling constituency where 18 candidates are contesting just four seats.
