Elderly woman dies, three more people hospitalised after two-car collision

An elderly woman has died following a two-car collision in Co Monaghan yesterday evening.

Three other people, including an man in his nineties, were taken to hospital with injuries, none of which are believed to be life-threatening.

The incident occurred at approximately 5.30pm when two cars collided on the R188, Monaghan to Cootehill road, at Stranooden.

A female passenger in her eighties was taken by ambulance to Cavan General Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

She was part of a group of five travelling in the car at the time of the collision.

The driver of the car, a woman in her forties, and a second passenger, a man in his nineties, were also removed from the scene to Cavan General Hospital with minor injuries.

Two other passengers did not require hospital treatment.

The driver of the second car, a woman in her seventies, was also taken to Cavan General Hospital, her injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

She was the sole occupant of the second car.

Garda Forensic Collision investigators are expected to examine the scene this morning.

The road is closed and diversions are in place.

The Coroner has been notified of the incident.
