Elderly woman dies in road crash
GARDAI are investigating a three-car collision which claimed the life of an elderly woman.
The collision occurred outside Loughrea, Co Galway, yesterday.
The victim, a woman in her 80s, was the driver of one of the vehicles.
She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second woman, in her 30s, was removed to University Hospital Galway where she is being treated for her injuries. Her condition is not life-threatening.
The driver of the third car did not need hospitalisation.
Gardai, two units of the fire brigade, and two ambulances quickly arrived on the scene and dealt with the injured.
They also worked to quickly extinguish a blaze after one of the three vehicles caught fire.
The collision occurred shortly before 5pm on the N65 between Kilmeen Cross and Kilreekil. The road was the main Galway to Dublin route prior to the opening of the M6 motorway.
The road was closed for a time yesterday evening as a result and forensic investigators carried out an examination of the area.
A garda spokesperson said an investigation into the crash was continuing.
