A woman in her 80s has died in a Cork house fire.

The woman, who is understood to be 89 and who lived alone, was found unresponsive in her home off the Model Farm Road in Cork shortly before 10pm when Cork Fire Brigade were alerted to a blaze by neighbours.

Despite desperate efforts to revive her, the pensioner was pronounced dead before she could be transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

A number of Cork Fire Brigade units attended the scene and the blaze was extinguished within a short time.

Fire brigade and Garda forensic experts began a detailed examination of the property to determine the precise cause of the blaze.

However, the fire is not being treated as suspicious and the blaze is believed to be accidental.

Locals expressed shock at the tragedy.

The woman is understood to have been resident in the area for most of her life.

A file on the matter will be prepared for the Cork Coroner.
