Elderly farmer killed by cow

AN elderly farmer tragically died trying to save his son as he was being attacked by a cow.

The 74-year-old man, named locally as Michael O'Dea, had gone to dose a newly-born calf with his son Eddie at their farm at Clonina near Cree in west Clare on Saturday morning.

The agitated cow is understood to have turned on the younger man but when his father tried to intervene and save his son, the animal then turned on the pensioner kicking the helpless man several times.

Eddie, who is in his 30s, suffered a broken ankle but Mr O'Dea was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Health and Safety Authority has been notified and two separate probes into the tragic accident are under way.
