Elderly couple killed in three-car road crash
AN elderly couple were killed in a three-car collision last night on a road packed with bank holiday weekend commuters.
The accident -- at Lissarda on the main N22 Cork-Killarney Road -- occurred shortly before 6.30pm and left two dead, four injured and two other motorists deeply shocked.
The car carrying the elderly couple was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle carrying a family of four -- and a third vehicle carrying two other people was then struck.
The collision forced the closure of the road, with major traffic diversions put in place.
The woman, who was in her mid-60s and was the driver, was killed in the initial impact. Her husband, who was in his early 70s and a front-seat passenger, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics before he could be transferred to Cork University Hospital.
Four people in the second vehicle were also injured. Another two people in the third car were unhurt, although they were treated for shock.
The four injured -- a husband, wife and two young children -- were transferred to Cork University Hospital for precautionary tests and treatment. All four are understood to have suffered non life-threatening injuries.
Gardai closed the road, some 8km east of Lissarda, to allow for an inspection by crash-scene investigators.
Macroom gardai have appealed for anyone who was travelling on the road between Lissarda and Crookstown Cross between 6pm and 7pm and who may have witnessed the collision to contact them.
One theory being examined is that the driver of one vehicle may have fallen ill in the seconds before the collision.
The elderly couple are believed to be from Cork and were driving toward Cork city at the time of the crash.
