It used to be a candle lit by a doting grandmother, but now the special rituals before the all-important Leaving Certificate exams include everything from blessed pens to motivational videos on YouTube.

One student from Loreto College on St Stephen’s Green wore a watch with a small Mickey Mouse face that she got as a child as her ‘good luck’ charm, another had her pen blessed by the local priest.

For some of the students from The Institute of Education, Lower Leeson Street in Dublin city centre, a morning shower did the trick to calm them down before the exams ahead.

The days of a candle are long gone for this generation of students, as another group of young men said it was motivational videos and inspirational speeches on YouTube that did the trick.

“I just pray!” laughed another student.

A total of 118,000 students took their places at exam tables across the country this morning for the beginning of the Leaving and Junior Certificate exams.

The exams kicked off with English Paper 1 this morning with the late Irish poet Seamus Heaney turning up in the comprehension section proving a surprise for some.
