Twelve subject departments in University College Dublin (UCD) and Trinity College Dublin (TCD) rank among the world's best, according to the latest global league table.

Despite other international rankings showing slippage for Irish universities, some subject departments are among the strongest in the world.

UCD and Trinity each have six departments listed in the top 50 in the lQS World University Rankings by Subject 2019, based on four measures including reputation among academics and employers and research citations.

The tables (www.TopUniversities.com) are an overview of more than 1,200 universities, ranked in 48 subject tables and include the seven Irish universities, DIT (now TU Dublin), Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the National College of Art and Design.

UCD is Ireland's most-represented institution, featuring in 39 of the tables, while Trinity is ranked in 34.

The top 12 placements are: Trinity - Classics and Ancient History (13), English Language and Literature (28), Engineering: Mineral and Mining (39), Nursing (41), Performing Arts (42), Pharmacy & Pharmacology (50).

UCD - Veterinary Science (26), Library and Information Management (38), Nursing (44), English Language and Literature (49), Engineering: Mineral & Mining (50), Sports-related subjects (50).

While Ireland has doubled the number of top 50 placements since last year, QS director of research Ben Sowter said Ireland's performance, was "broadly consistent". In total, 26 subject departments experienced a drop, while 22 saw an improvement.

NUI Galway had three fewer rankings. The University of Limerick, Dublin City University, and UCD had more improvements than drops while University College Cork, DIT, and Maynooth had more drops than improvements.
