Four Junior Certificate students have called for an extra 30 minutes to be allowed for the English exam.

Tara O'Sullivan (15), from Loreto College on St Stephen's Green in Dublin, appeared before the Joint Committee on Public Petitions with fellow students Adrianne Ward, Ellen McKimm and Faye Dolan.

Committee chairman Sean Sherlock said it was the first time petitioners have appeared before it.

Tara told the TDs that she believed the current time limit on the English exam was unfair.

"When I understood we were to do this English paper in two hours I was shocked," she said.

"It was like a competition to see how fast you could write instead of an actual test of your knowledge and ability. More time is necessary."
