The Education and Skills Minister is getting new powers to appoint an investigator to a university where concerns arise over governance or management issues.

At the moment, the minister is limited in options and can only move either with consent of the college, or after going through a High Court process. The new measures will strengthen oversight of the higher education sector.

Provision for the new powers will be made in the Technological Universities Bill, which Education Minister Richard Bruton says is a legislative priority. The aim is to have it passed in time to allow for the creation of a Dublin Technological University by this time next year.
