Grow your own crystals
This is the International Year of Crystallography and to mark it, the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC), in conjunction with Celebrate Science Festival,is running a national crystal-growing competition for primary and post-primary school pupils.
The competition will not only enable students to grow their own crystals, but it will increase students' awareness and understanding of the importance of crystals in our lives today.
To help students along the way, the SSPC is hosting a crystal-growing workshop on Saturday November 15, from 12 noon to 3pm, in the Hunt Museum, Limerick.
SSPC general manager Jon O'Halloran said it was an exciting opportunity for young people to engage with the concepts of crystallography and crystallisation and to understand the science behind crystals and to practice growing their own crystals.
* The SSPC is an SFI-funded world-leading research centre focused upon next generation medicines by developing more environmentally sustainable methods for drug manufacture; increasing the range of medicines available to the public; and reducing drug manufacturing costs. It is based in the University of Limerick.
