A very student friendly paper, with a nice variety of interesting, accessible topics was how teacher, Clare Grealy described the Leaving Certificate higher level Irish Paper One.

Ms Grealy of the Institute of Education, Dublin said there was  “was something for everybody“.

"Unlike previous years, there was no overlap between this paper and recent mock exam papers", she said.

One of the essays was second-level education in Ireland, which Ms Grealy felt would have given good scope to weaker students as they would know a lot about the subject and would have prepared material on it for their oral exam.

Other essay topics were: 'scandals in the sports world', 'political leaders of today', 'violence throughout the world' and 'society of Ireland in 2017 is a just and fair society'.

In Section B (story section) the topic was 'loneliness', while Section C (debate or speech) delivered topics on which the vast majority of students would have been banking - the impact on Ireland of Brexit and housing and homelessness.
