The last week of the Leaving Certificate started with “ a well-structured paper, with no nasty surprises," according to teacher Pat Doyle.

But he noted that some questions combined topics in a way that has not happened traditionally.

Mr Doyle, of the Institute of Education, Dublin ”well prepared students will do well”.

He described questions in Section A as “fairly standard” although Question 2 may have proved slightly tricky for some, as there was an element of maths introduced to a part of it.

In Section B, he noted that three questions combined a number of different topics, which traditionally would have appeared in separate questions by themselves.

In Question 7 light and sound were combined in Question 8 electricity and electromagnetism appeared together and in Question 9 modern physics and light were combined.

“In each case there were two separate, sizeable topics combined together. The examiners appear to be designing the paper to ensure that students cover the entire course," he said.
