Well done to the almost 58,000 candidates who sat the Leaving Certificate exams in June.

Many school-leavers - about 47,000 of this year's candidates - are depending on today's results to secure a place in a third-level course of choice and although they may not know it yet, the vast majority should rest assured their name is on that seat.

Others have different ideas about their next step, perhaps a post-Leaving Certificate (PLC) or other further education course, or maybe they are eyeing up one of the many new apprenticeship opportunities that will start coming on stream later this year.

It is no exaggeration to say that the recently announced modernisation of the apprenticeship system opens up an exciting chapter in post-school education and training in Ireland.

Some school-leavers may want a break from education and will seek to go directly into the workplace. But, in the modern age, with its ever-increasing demand for skills and qualifications, they are advised to keep alive the possibility of future study, in whatever field captures their imagination and interest.

Today, most of all, is for students and their families to celebrate individual achievement. Avoid comparisons with others: each person's education journey is their own, and one that should be enjoyed, whatever route it takes.
