Children to learn 'mindfulness'
IRISH school students will be able to study 'mindfulness' techniques - the relaxation method popularised by celebrities such as Katy Perry and Gwyneth Paltrow - from next month.
A Department of Education spokesperson confirmed the ground-breaking initiative to the Irish Independent.
It will be part of the new Junior Cycle, which provides considerable leeway for both teachers and pupils, with personal development subjects.
It will form part of a new short course, part of the SPHE programme, available to schools from this September. It includes guidelines on "minding myself and others" and "mental health", as well as the "practice of some relaxation techniques."
A Department of Education spokesperson confirmed the course will be specifically aimed at improving the students' mental, emotional and social development.
It's hoped mindfulness techniques will help with cases of school bullying - which can affect up to one in four students attending school.
