It is a picture that would make an arachnophobe shudder.

It is a picture that would make an arachnophobe shudder.

But nine-year-old Shauna Ní Churraoin from Leitir Móir, Co Galway, even managed a smile as she allowed a tarantula to go walkabout across her face.

The fearless schoolgirl was among the 20,000 young people who flocked to NUI Galway for the 20th Galway Science and Technology Exhibition yesterday.

The free event encourages children to develop an interest in science, technology, engineering and maths.

Other children got entangled with a python, took part in science experiments and went on a mission to Mars to learn about the creation of new crops to grow on other planets.
