They say travel broadens the mind and so it was when teachers from Villiers School in Limerick attended Model United Nations conferences with their pupils over a number years.

The three- to five-day conferences are a platform for students from around the world to debate topics of international interest and get insights into each others' cultures and education systems.

While the focus is on student learning, the Villiers teachers came back with a big idea to introduce the International Baccalaureate (IB) to the school, alongside the Leaving Cert.

The IB is a globally recognised school-leaving qualification, which is particularly popular with families that travel between countries for work because their children can pick up the curriculum where they left off at the last posting.

Villiers has students of about 30 different nationalities on its rolls, many of them the sons and daughters of staff working in the University of Limerick and Limerick University Hospital, but also boarders.

Last September, it became the first school outside Dublin and the only boarding school in Ireland to offer the IB.

The first cohort of students doing it is a mix of Irish and international pupils and they are "loving it", according to principal Jill Storey.

Students have the choice of doing either the Leaving Cert or the IB, with an additional fee for doing the IB.

One of the key differences between the IB and the Leaving Cert is how subjects, rather than being studied in isolation, "must talk to each other" said the principal. She described it as "very much the type of learning now being promoted in the new junior cycle" and with a mix of continuous assessment and final exams.

She recalled her teachers as describing the evidence they had seen of an IB education as "fantastic".

They told her the students displayed "all the skills we would want of our students. They felt, this is who we are".

The teachers made the case to the board and the parents' association.

Staff were asked their views and came on board, the school did its research and went through an accreditation process.

In all, the journey took about five years, and has opened up a whole new world of study.
