Cormac Bourke is to leave the role of editor of the Sunday Independent to take up the new role of editor of the Irish Independent and independent.ie.

"After five incredible years as editor of the Sunday Independent, it is time for a new challenge," he said. "I am pleased to say I am now the editor of the Irish Independent and editor of independent.ie, home to all the great journalism of the Irish Independent and Sunday Independent.

"I look forward to seeing how those iconic news brands will evolve as we develop a new digital future for our journalism, building on its great strength in print."

Mr Bourke (43), a native of Athy, Co Kildare, was appointed editor of the Sunday Independent in January 2015.

He was executive editor of the Irish Independent from November 2013 to December 2014. He joined the Irish Independent in 2007 as assistant editor (news), subsequently becoming news editor and then executive editor.

A married father of four, he holds a BA in Journalism from Dublin City University.

He previously worked for Ireland on Sunday, Dublin Daily and the Irish Daily Star. He will continue to edit the Sunday Independent until a new editor has been appointed.
