UP to 130 jobs are being axed by drug company Alkermes at its factory in Athlone, writes John Mulligan.
In a major blow to the Westmeath town, between 100 and 130 staff will be made redundant over two years. The plant currently employs about 420 people, but Alkermes has sought to reassure workers that the plant will continue to play an important part in its corporate strategy.
"In light of reductions in manufacturing demand from our partners for certain pharmaceutical products that have become generic or are nearing the end of their commercial life, Alkermes made the decision to review resources at our Athlone facility," said the company.
Alkermes said that the cuts will be made through a combination of "natural attrition, voluntary redundancy and compulsory redundancy".
